Mai Life is an award-winning magazine and publishing company regarded as one of the best in the region. The company is recognised for having some of the most dynamic and talented people in the print business, from cutting-edge journalism, writing, photography and graphic design.
Mai Life has covered almost every aspect of lifestyle and development in Fiji, and its work has been declared “groundbreaking” and “inspiring”. Since rolling off the press for the first time in June 2007, Mai Life has won eight major print awards at the Fiji Awards for Media Excellence (FAME), winning some of these awards for two years in a row.
These include Print Journalist of the Year for 2007 and 2008 and Business Journalist of the Year for 2007 and 2008 when Stanley Simpson was editor. We also won the Robert Keith Reid Award for Outstanding Journalism in 2007. Regionally the magazine has won the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) Print Journalist of the Year for 2009.
Our photography is highly regarded as among the best in quality and creativity, and the company is also renowned for its graphic design work and layout.
Along with Mai TV, Mai Life brings a new level of spirit, enthusiasm and dynamic talent to the publishing sector in Fiji, and our work will give our clients a fresh new look, an exciting new feel, and an admirable new presence.
THE STAFF
Ricardo Morris
Ricardo Morris took over as editor in December 2009. He previously worked as a freelance contributor to Mai Life and did a brief stint as associate editor. Ricardo has been passionate about writing and journalism since he was a teenager when he would put together all sorts of newsletters just for the heck of it. Straight out of high school he threw himself into journalism before being hauled away to London two years later for study.
While there he secured a place on a BBC mentoring scheme where he spent six months while studying. He received his journalism qualifications in 2004 before returning to Fiji. He has worked for all three national daily newspapers, was a staff writer for the now-defunct Review Magazine and a reporter for Fijilive. He was chief sub-editor at the Fiji Daily Post, sub-editor at the Fiji Times, the Fiji correspondent for Hawaii-based Pacific Magazine and did a stint as the Fiji correspondent for Radio Australia.
He loves reading and has a (sadly depleted) library of books of many shades, has loved photography since childhood (although strangely has never owned the camera of his dreams) and loves his (now re-homed) dogs Ruby and Gordon.
Ricardo is now into his third year of law studies at the University of the South Pacific, having decided that knowledge of the law would make a good compliment for journalism.
Ricardo is also editorial adviser for Mai TV.
Josua Toganivalu – Creative Director
Josua Toganivalu is the founding Creative Director of Mai Life magazine from when it first published in 2007. He left in 2008 to pursue other interests before returning in January 2010 to resume his role as lead graphics guy. He has some 15 years of experience in graphic design. His responsibilities include overall designing and layout of the magazine, ads, billboards, or any print material required and advising on directing photo shoots. Josua has worked at Quality Print Limited, Fiji Sun Limited, Pacifika Communications, Fiji Institute of Technology, Fiji Living Magazine and Digicel Pacific.
He lists his interests as his faith, family, music, art (in all forms), fishing and farming.
Judith Ragg – Publisher
Judith Ragg is also our lead photographer. One of Fiji’s most experienced and respected photographers, Judith has done shoots for exclusive clients from five-star resorts to major international corporations. She has had a career in photography spanning three decades and is a successful business manager.
Savenaca Viriviri – Distribution Manager/Photographer
Savenaca Viriviri is Mai Life’s go-to guy for queries about magazine distribution and sales – and when we need a photographer. He has taken cover shots for Mai Life magazine of people from all walks of life and status, and has covered major events in the country in the time he has worked here. He previously worked for Fiji Living Magazine and Morris Hedstrom. He likes socialising and music – and of course, photography.
Josefa Navuku
Josefa Navuku is a graphic designer. He has been with the magazine since February 2009 and has designed ads and promotions for many reputable companies.
Salote Ralulu – Intern
Salote Ralulu is a marketing intern while at the same time learning about writing and photography. She has been at Mai Life since September 2009 in what she says has been an “exciting and enriching” time.
She has been a library assistant at the New Zealand International Campus of Central Queensland University and worked as a sales rep for Avon New Zealand.
