‘Au Domoni iko’

How two lovers crossed many boundaries to become one. By Matilda Simmons.

If there’s one aspect that stands out about Niumaia and Janine Karavaki’s marriage, it’s their long journey.

Their long journey of crossing many boundaries so they could keep their love alive, of overcoming cultural barriers and the distance between their countries. After finally tying the knot in front of their families and friends in September last year, Niumaia could only whisper in Janine’s ears: “We did it!”

Janine hails from Graben-Neudorf, a quaint village located in the south-west of Germany, a country more than 9000 miles from Fiji, while Niumaia, an IT officer at the Fiji Inland Revenue Customs Authority, hails from Vakano village in Lakeba, Lau.
