Two local suppliers of chicken have been commended by the Consumer Council of Fiji for ensuring adequate supply of chicken in the market this festive season. Crest Chicken Limited and Rooster Limited have been singled out by the council for their hard work and regularity in supplying chicken to supermarkets throughout Fiji.
Chicken is the most popular choice on consumers shopping list during Christmas shopping and end-of-the year festivities. It is a cheaper alternative to other more expensive imported meat where most households buy a lot during this period of time for parties and functions held during normally during this time of the year.
The councils latest survey in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa showed that most chicken sizes and types are available in abundance in most supermarkets. The survey also revealed that there have been more decreases than increases in chicken prices when comparing January and December prices. The survey prices are normal prices and do not cover specials or promotions.
The Council noted that chicken prices varied between supermarkets despite their locations. For example, two supermarkets within walking distance of each other were selling a Crest No. 12chicken for $12.50 and $12.95, a difference of 45cents. Consumers can save money by comparing prices in different supermarkets before making purchases. However, the Council has advised consumers spread their shopping looking for the best prices as prices will vary a lot in retail outlets.
The surveys are done every second Tuesday of each month and covers selected major retailers in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa.
