Fiji’s Backpackers Association was on cloud nine last week as they scooped the major International Activity award at the Adventure Travel and Backpacker Expo in Sydney last weekend.
Fiji beat 11 other nominees for the award from Europe, Asia and North and South America, event coordinators confirmed.
Representing the Fiji Backpackers Association and Ratu Kini’s Backpackers and Dive resort executive, Tui Kabu said the Sydney Adventure and Backpackers expo at the Sydney Town Hall, was the only show they attended and customers and travel agents helped to spread the message at such events.
“I think it is a good experience for us instead of waiting in the office for them to come to us we are actually out here and marketing our product so we would like to thank the South Pacific Tourism Organisation for coming to support us and we would like to return the favour by sharing the experience with other members,” Kabu said.
The SPTO coordinated and co-sponsored the participation of Ratu Kini’s backpackers & Dive Resort, Smugglers Cove Beach Resort and Beachcomber Island Group from the private sector plus representatives from the national tourism offices of the Solomon Islands, the islands of Tahiti and two of their private sector members and the Kingdom of Tonga at the event.
Adventure Travel and Backpacker Expo social marketing executive Janie Dent said they received strong feedback from participants who wanted more information on the Fiji product through the SPTO.
On the SPTO booths displaying the wide Pacific variety of tourism products she said,” It was absolutely wonderful having you and the representatives at the Adventure Travel Expo. Very popular amongst the visitors and co-exhibitors alike.”
“I noticed some visitors expressing serious interest in your products and heard many of them saying that they wanted to come speak with SPTO about Fiji,” Ms Dent said.
STA Travel, the expert team for youth travel and life-enriching experiences are the major sponsors for the expo and they have been integrating the expos with their ongoing marketing to ensure the message reached as many potential visitors as possible, with the Pacific benefitting from such exposure.
SPTO E-Marketing Specialist Pauline Benson was upbeat about the award.
“The win was a great result from our attendance at the Adventure Travel event and while Fiji took out the award for Best International Activity, we see it as a win for all Small Medium Enterprises in the Pacific,” Ms Benson said.
