For some Fijians, Christmas might be coming early.
Global market changes will result in a drop in fuel and gas prices here at home tomorrow ranging from 15c to $3.16.
This was announced at the Attorney-General’s office this afternoon.
“Obviously, this is good news for everybody, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas,” said Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. “Everybody travels in this period.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added, “you all do a lot of cooking too around Christmas so the cost of cooking will be significantly reduced.”
Typically, price adjustments are carried out in accordance with quarterly reviews and tomorrow’s adjustments will not have an effect on the timeline for the regular review.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the quick changes, to take effect tomorrow, were made possible by the recent developments of government templates.
“It is responsive to such changes and because of that level of flexibility of the pricing mechanism that has been put in place we are now able to give this reduction in price.”
While there is cause for celebration, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stressed the importance of saving energy wherever possible.
“We are all beholden to the world price market,” he reminded the media in attendance. “We are price takers, not price givers.”
