Minister for Defence Timoci Natuva has urged police officers to be more vigilant during this festive season to ensure the safety and security of all Fijians.
Mr Natuva, a former senior officer in the Fiji Navy, is on a four-day tour of the Western Division visiting police stations.
The Head of Fijis Defence Ministry commended the officers and their families for their commitment and dedication to serving the public.
We need to ensure that all Fijians are safe during this festive season. I understand that we lack resources but this will change from next year because we have an increase in the budget, he told officers in Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki.
Lesser accidents and incidents is what our duty is and we must ensure that wherever they are – either on the beach for a picnic, or on the roads, we need to ensure that they are safe.
The minister urged senior officers in the division to ensure that lessons were drawn from challenges in 2014 so that the force was able to improve its services to the public.
This year has been very challenging especially with the 2014 elections but I am pleased that the first ever democratic elections was a success and Government hopes that you (police officers) continue to ensure that our citizens are safe no matter where they are, Mr Natuva added.
