LOCAL rugby fans have been asked to support Fiji’s bid to host one of the HSBC
World Rugby Sevens Series legs at home.
And to do this, the Fiji Rugby Union hopes to register at least 300,000 people on
the website Fijifor7s.com before bid tender closes on February 28.
A total of 18 countries are bidding to host one of the 10 legs, making it very
“Part of that bid is for us to gather support . We want to go to world rugby with
300,000 people behind us,” FRU Chief Executive Office John O’Connor said.
“We have opened a website called Fijifor7s.com. At the moment we have a few
thousand supporters but we want all Fijians to be behind this bid to show world
rugby that rugby sevens is in our DNA, it is in our blood and it is part of the
fabric of our society,” Mr O’Connor said.
He sad a lot of hard work needed to be done to realize the dream of one day
hosting a world sevens leg in Fiji.
A 7s task force has been put together to spearhead the ambitious plan, led by
general manager commercial, Brian Thorburn and assisted by Greg Peters of
Forefront Sports and Media.
For those who register on Fijifor7s website, a major prize will be drawn by the
end of February and the winner will get a paid trip for two to Hong Kong with
free tickets to watch the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong 7s.
A six-week media campaign started this week to garner home support for Fiji’s bid.
