PLAY FOR NATIONAL PRIDE NOT POPULARITY.

FORMER national 7s prop Pio Tuwai is of the view that players selected into the national team should have a sense of national pride.

Speaking in Fijian to MaiLife Pio said that selected players should have confidence in themselves first and foremost.

“Na tamata digitaki e dodonu me vakadeitaki koya ena nonai tutu sa digitaki kina sega ni lako wale tu ga me laki rawa kina nona rogo se cava.” (“The selected player should be confident and not use his selection into the national team to gain popularity”.)

Tuwai who was dropped from the 7s squad last year, travelled all the way from New Zealand to play for Mc Donald’s Saunaka in the Mana Whey Fiji Coral Coast 7s 2018 tournament held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka and hopefully get selected into the national squad this time around.

“Dina au sa tu mai Niusiladi au vakavinavinaka ena veikacivi meu mai qito tale ena Coral Coast 7s qo. Dina au vakacegui ena yabaki sa oti, ia meu vaka au sa tukuna oti eda vakarorogo tikoga ena loma ni dua na lewa.” (“Even though I am now residing in New Zealand, I am grateful for the invitation to participate in this Coral Coast tournament. Despite being dropped from the national squad last year, I am here again to give it another go and whether I get into the squad or not, I will abide by the decision”.)

Tuwai said he still has a long way to go before he calls it quits in the game of rugby.

In his view he can still play for the next five years or more if God forbids.
