The Suva Rotary Club in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education launched the school awareness for rheumatic heart disease at St. Annes Primary School in Suva yesterday (June 4).
Rotary Club of Suvas President and Westpacs General Manager, Adrian Hughes said the initiative is in line with the organizations mission in bringing positive changes to the local community.
The mission of rotary is to bring about positive change to the local community and we are focusing more on NCDs but specifically rheumatic heart disease, illness he said. Theres one child in almost every classroom that has RHD symptoms so that is why we decided to get involved.
With the tag line Sore throat can kill you, Hughes is confident their goal of educating everyone in Fiji on how sore throat could lead to RHD would be made easier if they go through the school system.
Class 6 students of St. Annes Primary School were briefed on how sore throat could lead to RHD with the help of diagrams and pictures. Schoolteacher, Matila Rabouliku said the program is necessary for primary schools because children below the age of 15 are usually the victims of this disease.
This program is so important because these children are the main targets of this disease. If we do not take heed now, then the future of our children will be at risk, she said.
Students also performed to the delight of guests present, songs and poems based on the tagline of the awareness program.
