Tropical Cyclone Pam was located about 1, 000km Northwest of Nadi at 8 am today. Now upgraded to Category 4, its movement has slowed and it is currently moving towards the south at 4km/hr while yesterday it was moving at 7km/hr.
It is expected to maintain southerly track for the next 48 hours.
It is highly expected that TC Pam can further intensify and attain a Category 5 system in the next 18 hours.
On the current projected path, it is expected to track to the west of Fiji.
On its projected path Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam is expected to lie about 850km West- northwest of Nadi at 8am tomorrow, and about 800km west of Nadi at 8am on Saturday.
At this stage, Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam is not expected to directly affect Fiji. But the associated active rain bands will bring heavy rain over the country with possibly strong and gusty northwest winds.
A heavy rain warning is in force for whole of the Fiji group. Heavy rainfall may cause flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
A strong wind is in force for Rotuma, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lomaiviti Group, western half of Viti Levu and nearby smaller islands. Expect strong north-westerly winds with average speeds of 45-55km/hr and gusts up to 80km/hr.
Mariners should expect strong north to north-westerly winds with average speeds of 25 to 30 knots and gusting up to 45 knots. Rough to very rough seas. Rain bands and strong winds associated with an active convergence zone are expected to continue to affect Rotuma.
A strong wind warning remains in force for Rotuma land and waters.
